What is Tarmac Surfacing?
Tarmac (also known as asphalt or macadam) is a smooth, durable surface created by mixing aggregate with bitumen binder, then laying it hot and compacting it to create a solid, waterproof layer. It’s the same material used on roads and car parks, proven over decades to handle heavy traffic and extreme weather.
For driveways, tarmac offers a practical, cost-effective solution that can be installed quickly and used almost immediately. Unlike block paving which requires individual units to be laid and jointed, or resin surfaces which need extended curing times, tarmac is installed in one continuous process and becomes trafficable within 24-48 hours.
We install tarmac driveways using hot-rolled asphalt over properly prepared stone sub-bases. The surface is laid to correct falls for drainage, compacted while hot to achieve maximum density, and finished with either a smooth or textured surface depending on your preference. The result is a hard-wearing, low-maintenance driveway that can last decades with minimal attention.
